K9 Sammy

Sammy became a member of the Macungie Police Department in April 2008 after overwhelming support from the borough residents. Through several donations from both borough businesses and private citizens the K9 program was created.

Sammy is a Belgian Malinos (pronounced mal-a-wan) born in Holland. He began his career in Macungie when he was 15 months old. He and handler Corporal Mullen went through training and have been certified through the Eastern Police Canine Association.

Sammy is, by legal description, a police working dog and has been trained in patrol and apprehension, narcotic detection and human scent tracking. Sammy can be deployed to search  for lost residents and fleeing suspects.

All of his commands are given in a foreign language and he will only respond to Corporal Mullen. He will watch Corporal Mullen's every move and act if he detects danger.

It is important to remind residents and visitors that Sammy is not a typical domesticated dog. He will act to protect himself or Corporal Mullen. Sammy should NEVER be approached unless permission from Corporal Mullen has been given.

One of the Macungie Police cruisers have been outfitted to accommodate Sammy to keep him warn and cool depending on the temperature inside the vehicle. If it is too warm in his vehicle an alarm will sound and a fan will automatically turn on.

Please visit the K9 page for Sammy merchandise information.

Private donations can be made by forwarding them to the Macungie Police Department. Please note on the form of donation that it is intended for the K9 program.

Sammy and Macungie Police Department are “A Paws-itive Force”.
